OLPC: Give 1 Get 1

Nicholas Negroponte’s One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) program is off to a less than stellar beginning. The biggest hurdle (outside of Intel) is securing funds from third world countries who verbally promised to purchase units for their school children.

The organization is allowing Americans to purchase a unit for a child in a third world country — and getting an XO laptop for yourself.

I believe a lot of people would like to help OLPC deliver their computers to needy children in third world countries. Did you realize this is also tax deductible? I’m very interested in helping a child learn.

This laptop program is going to change the world. What a great gift to those who do not have electricity in their homes or running water. OLPC shows children in third world countries that Americans care. Actually I’m more impressed how OLPC has worked to drive down pricing on components.

So why does Dell, Apple, HP, Compaq, IBM (take your pick) cost so much more?
