Goggle Maps

Now that Google has announced the beta release of their new Maps service, its time to review where we stand. MapQuest and Rand/McNally must be in crisis mode, especially MapQuest.

Google will begin driving users to this service and tie in search and blogging at some point after official release has been posted. However “Local Google” has been in beta release for many months. Google is now having to show Wall Street that technologies served over the web (for free) can help serve the company’s bottom line.

Google breaks ground on maps for the web.

1. At the top of the window type in “art school milwaukee wi”
2. Click the search button
3. Click on the text link “milwaukee institute of art & design”
Google hilights the location in a pop up balloon
Adds the contact information
telephone
US Postal and WWW addresses
Directions to and from
4. Click “To here” in the Directions listing
5. Type in your address of a location outside the state (I grew up in NW Ohio) and watch how Google maps out directions.

Observe how fast the refresh rates are for clicking on the sliding scale in the upper right hand corner….and the zoom in/out feature.

Goodbye Mapquest.
