WiscNet FTC Day 2: DDO

Requiring an online experience for high school graduation?

Following WiscNet’s Digital Districts Online (DDO) Symposium to explore the opportunity of requiring an online experience for high school graduation, development has progressed in Wisconsin following Michigan’s lead to be the first state to require online coursework for graduation.

DDO ftc 2007

Carole Witt Stark, Director of Curriculum & Instruction, Merrill SD; Andrea Deau, Education Technology Liaison, WiscNet and John Krogman UW-Platteville.

Merrill and Milton school representatives along with Andrea Deau shared stories regarding the development of this state-wide online learning opportunity. Globalization is a factor driving this movement from Detroit to towns across Wisconsin impacted by the loss of jobs.  It will become the next big thing…without a doubt as we continue to compete globally and must provide solutions to students in metropolitan areas or rural farmlands.

WiscNet FTC Day 2: Net Neutrality

Keynote Speaker Dr. Robert McChesney, co-founder of Free Press gave a powerful address regarding Net Neutrality.

McChesney

His analogy to The Godfather Part II is pretty accurate. Telcos are seeking to slice the largest cut of the cake for themselves and want to push cable companies out of business.
Hyman Roth did not fair well at the airport.

WiscNet FTC Day 2

With an early presentation of the Internet2 K20 Working Group to the Board meeting Day 2 of the FTC picked up right where Day 1 left off.

workgroup reports

I will clearly support the work done by WiscNet’s databackup group. It may not sound sexy but think Katrina…it moves to the conversation and efforts to the forefront of WiscNet’s benefit to its membership: Community.

WiscNet FTC Day 1: Internet2

Dan Gross and I moderated the FTC session Integrating Art Into the Teaching of Math, Science and other Disciplines enabled by Internet2.

Internet2 - Dale Hilton

There could be no greater example of the power of WiscNet and Internet2 than by having Dale Hilton from the Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) present a distance learning sample session on the Harlem Renaissance. Talk about hitting a homerun! This was an amazing session for educators in Wisconsin to experience Art and multimedia in a distance learning setting…from Madison to Cleveland over Internet2 in real-time.
