Visual plagiarism

While searching for Masters hilights I found AT&T’s Blue room media directory. Their visual identity jumped right out as a copy of Terena, Europe’s version of Internet2, a high speed academic research network.

terena at&t blueroom

Terena’s brand identity was redesigned in late 2006 and incorporates their identity into their website layout. AT&T’s blue room favors music, sports and gaming media….but no idea on when it was introduced.

So who is hurting who’s brand?

Michigan’s Merit network

This week WiscNet‘s Internet2 K20 webconference featured Jim Moran from Merit Network, Inc. Merit is Michigan’s version of WiscNet. As Outreach Lead Coordinator Jim shared his experiences how Michigan schools are using high-bandwidth applications.

meritMichigan has 15 public universities but no single university system like Wisconsin. Merit began in 1966 with the University of Michigan, Michigan State and Wayne State connecting for mainframe access. Today Merit has now grown connecting to Chicago and Canada, extending their regional partnerships.

Merger: Internet2 & NLR

The off again/on again merger between Internet2 and the National Lambda Rail looks to be actually happening now. At the December Internet2 member meeting in Chicago it was announced merger plans were not moving forward, but what a difference three months can make. Word on the street is the I2/NLR merger will be complete by end of April?!?!?  While the press for I2 has taken off since the December announcement of the newer Internet2 and NYSERnet, NLR has been peering with many more networking organizations.

Here is the Internet2 backbone today at 10GB and quickly moving to 100GB:

And the current National Lambda Rail:
NLR

With the development of Regional Optical Networks (RONs) I’m not sure why the Northern Tier (from the Dakotas to Idaho) are not lighting up faster.ron
The emerging Boreas network in the Midwest will add quite a bit of punch to Milwaukee and Madison.

Internet2 – Milwaukee

Fall 2006 Internet2 Member Meeting
Ship to Shore: Real-Time Science On Board UW-Milwaukee’s Research Vessel Neeskay
December 06, 2006, 10:30 AM – 11:45 AM
Location: CC11 A

Carmen Aguilar, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Great Lakes Water Institute
Gaye-Lynn Clyde, Underwater Educational Services, Diving Unlimited
Russell Cuhel, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Great Lakes Water Institute
Daniel Gross, SWING

UWM researchThis was a great presentation. First both Carmen and Russell spoke at the K20 Advisory Group Monday in Chicago and then were back in Milwaukee for their remote session via Internet2 video conferencing.

The only down side: waters were too cold and waves too high (7ft to 10ft) for an on-boat remote experience. Yet Carmen and Russell provided DVD playback of pre-recorded segments that made up for the weather restrictions.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has built a high speed wireless network into Lake Michigan which permits the Research Vessel Neeskay constant ship to shore communications as far as 16 miles away from the shore.

Panjai Tantatsanawong, UNINET

I was happy to meet both Panjai Tantatsanawong and Wichan Lertwipatrakul after their session. MIAD has a number of design students from Thailand studying in Milwaukee while sending MIAD Faculty to teach in Thailand since 2002.
thailand1Now as high speed academic networks are bridging Thailand to America on Internet2 new possibilities emerge to benefit MIAD.

We have such a strong impact in design from our Thailand students that this advancement can only benefit our students and the emerging Art communities in both Milwaukee and Thailand via UniNet and Internet2.
