Internet2 – Leading the way

MIT’s Technology Review has published a new article reviewing a new dynamic circuit test network to test how advanced networks, primarily located in academia can be moved to the commercial internet.

The dynamic circuit network provides a temporary connection to another location … like making a phone call: the user’s data would be carried directly to that other location, uninterrupted by the traffic of others sharing the network.

Eventually the technology advances from this test network could provide a solution to sending HD video over the regular internet.

Happy Valentine’s Day … from Google

Today Google is expected to offer business a new software service to make it easier for organizations to share documents and data via a new application called Team Edition.

This software should help Google continue to compete against Microsoft and in an odd way, Yahoo which may or may not end up being bought out eventually by the software giant in Redmond.

Latest read: Making Globalization Work

If you were first introduced to globalization via Tom Friedman‘s The World Is Flat, you may be interested to learn more about this wave of economics. Many point to the recent book by Joseph Stiglitz called Making Globalization Work. This is a follow-up to his 2003 book Globalization and Its Discontents.

Stiglitz is professor of economics at Columbia. He served as Chairman of President Clinton’s Council of Economic Advisers from 1995-97. He followed that appointment by serving as Chief Economist and Senior VP of the World Bank from 1997-2000. Stiglitz was one of three to receive the 2001 Noble Prize in economics.

He accurately addresses areas of economic globalization that continue to fail across the globe in shaping market opportunities of underdeveloped nations. Needless to say the real golden rule applies: He who has the Gold makes the rules.

Access in Asia, Africa and the Middle East are currently the regions of the world without access. India is reporting its bandwidth has been cut in half.

This shows the weakness of patching legacy communication tools. Redundant cables anyone?

BMW’s open source project

BMW is working to create an Open Source based telematic systems with Connexis and WirelessCar. Telematics is the hot term for telecommunication & informatics. This project will permit BMW to update services to a vehicle without requiring additional equipment purchases. In a previous blog posting I suggested BMW was supporting IPv6 technologies and the telematics projects is a natural advantage for IPv6.

Under development since 2003 BMW’s ConnectedDrive research vehicles can communicate to one another exchanging information on traffic, weather and road conditions directly from car to car by means of WirelessLAN communication technology.
