Internet2 & Department of Energy

Not standing still following the NLR fallout…Internet2 and the Department of Energy (DOE) have successfully deployed a nationwide network with five interconnected rings with each ring consisting of one (or more) 10gigabit path. Placed together these rings form a coast-to-coast network for the backbone of the DOE.

This project was built to meet the emerging scientific needs of the DOE’s Office of Science which manages over 30 DOE laboratories and 100,000 scientists alone.Universities and other government agencies around the country include almost 20,000 researchers and research projects that extend across the globe to CERN the particle physics lab near Geneva.

Internet2 & Verizon

I2 Verizon BizInternet2 announced today that Verizon Business has joined Internet2 as a corporate member. Verizon joins corporate members including Google, Cisco, Northrop and Johnson & Johnson among others. Interest in Internet2’s 100GBs backbone is sparking interest all over the place.

Internet2’s corporate members are not just networking companies, but rather innovate firms seeking to enhance their business with advanced networks. Verizon will collaborate with the Internet2 community on advanced optical networking projects.

“One of the strongest values of the Internet2 community is its commitment to the exploration and development of leading-edge Internet technology.”

In addition today’s press release notes the development of next-generation content delivery and network security within the Internet2 community and Verizon. Will the delivery of HD video over the public internet be far behind?

Internet2 moving beyond 100Gbps

I was amused to read Arstechnica‘s News Desk article Internet2 at 100Gbps posted October 9th. However my blog post about this very topic from June 13th … well okay, I’m still glad to see more researchers, scientists, faculty and artists now have access to this ‘high capacity network’ anytime they need it.

USAToday also wrote an article hilighted at the fall Internet2 meeting in San Diego. More important is the ability of Internet2 to scale this ultra fast network to handle 100 wavelengths in the near future. Love the idea of riding this wave.

Tech futures in higher education

internet2 k20Today’s Live Discussion at the Chronicle of Higher Education points to the growth of new technologies that will change the college campus. Gartner’s “Hype Cycle for Higher Education” focused on technologies that will transform colleges in the next 10 years: global library digitization projects, personal devices with campus network access, Internet2, e-learning repositories, quantum computing and virtual worlds.
I am very glad to see Internet2 getting more press as a key, defining technology for the future of colleges.

Internet2: Now running 100Gigabits

Internet2

From coast to coast Internet2 is now connecting educational and research institutions across a new nationwide network at 100 Gigabits per second. For the Midwest is a perfect compliment to the new Boreas network announced this past spring. Public networks like WiscNet are automatically wired into this new upgrade. What a great jump for our national education and research communities.

Other views: ComputerWorld, PCWorld (Australia), The Register, PC Pro, Network World.

The network upgrade provides power and opportunity for K12 and Higher Educational institutions to continue to engage a global world for shared knowledge opportunities. At the regional level this brings city governments, libraries, hospitals, museums and technical colleges onto the network and into the conversation of participation. With a backbone of 100 GB/s HD video conferencing and remote instrumentation become accessible for the first time to a growing number of educators and students.
