Ship to Shore: Real-Time Science On Board UW-Milwaukee’s Research Vessel Neeskay
December 06, 2006, 10:30 AM – 11:45 AM
Location: CC11 A
Carmen Aguilar, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Great Lakes Water Institute
Gaye-Lynn Clyde, Underwater Educational Services, Diving Unlimited
Russell Cuhel, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Great Lakes Water Institute
Daniel Gross, SWING
This was a great presentation. First both Carmen and Russell spoke at the K20 Advisory Group Monday in Chicago and then were back in Milwaukee for their remote session via Internet2 video conferencing.
The only down side: waters were too cold and waves too high (7ft to 10ft) for an on-boat remote experience. Yet Carmen and Russell provided DVD playback of pre-recorded segments that made up for the weather restrictions.
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has built a high speed wireless network into Lake Michigan which permits the Research Vessel Neeskay constant ship to shore communications as far as 16 miles away from the shore.
