Paul is Chief Technology & Innovation Officer at Accenture. He holds a BS in computer engineering from the University of Michigan. James is Accenture’s Global Managing Director and former Managing Director of Accenture Research.

So, the real compelling idea for this book is the authors upfront note: we wrote the book just as the pandemic began. As a result everything changed, including the pace of change. As such, they indicate “IT changes we planned to undertake over 12 to 18 months occurred in a matter of days.” This actually serves as a baseline for their view of how AI innovations are turning the world upside.

Their focus is explored via an IDEAS framework. This is a combination of innovation components: Intelligence, Data, Expertise, Architecture, and Strategy. Their position: each are building blocks that lead to a future-oriented business marketplace driven by ‘all things’ AI. In addition, their position is that leading organizations will leverage human-machine collaboration to transform their organizational processes.

So, the drumbeats of AI have certainly peaked within 2023. Today ChatGPT is just 13 months old. And while the company is showing its age the impact upon society and business is now at a crossroads.

Accordingly for all the hype of Generative AI, organizations simply do not know how to deploy AI solutions. There are failed AI deployments within 2023. While much of the attention has certainly been to the lack of security and privacy within ChatGPT, the most important aspect for any organizations is confronting AI’s digital disruption including the impact upon employees.

This new release (September 2023) is certainly providing the most insightful articles by Tom Davenport, Marco Iansiti, Tsedal Neeley, and Ajay Agrawal. Each article is presented with three ideas: Problem, Causes, and Solutions.

The collected insights provided a cornerstone for understanding AI and the methods to deploy across any organization.

Perhaps ChatGPT Is a Tipping Point for AI by Ethan Mollick is a perfect article to convey how this service, less than 18th months old is this generation’s Netscape Navigator killer app.

The most important lesson: several articles have been expanded into published books that I find to be must reads. Organizations must digest their writing in order to fully understand the current world of AI.

To that end, today’s highly connected internet is much more robust than it was 30 years ago when the browser appeared and forever changed the world. But threats by foreign countries and organizations that push misinformation will confuse many. That is the difference to Netscape’s introduction.
