Understanding Large Language Models: Learning Their Underlying Concepts and Technologies by Thimira Amaratunga

Thimira holds a MS in Computer Science from the University of Colombo. A long time senior software architect at Pearson, today he is a software engineer at CloudMarc and even holds patents related to dynamic neural networks and online learning semantics.

This book is teaching underlying concepts of Large Language Models (LLMs). Thimira begins by introducing ChatGPT, and how it links to LLMs. Readers will next learn about Natural Language Processing (NLP) which led to the development of LLMs.

Thimira is striving to tackle some rather complex concepts regarding LLMs and is presenting them to readers in such a manner that is easier to understand. He is also providing insights into architecture, functions, and applications.

For more mature programmers, the book is aiming to provide a thorough understanding of LLMs in order to inspire them to implement these models in their projects.

Learn AI-assisted Python Programming: With GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT by Leo Porter and Daniel Zingaro

Leo holds an MS and PhD in Computer Science from the University of San Diego and is a Professor in Computer Science and Engineering at University of San Diego. Daniel holds a MS in Computer Science from McMaster University and PhD in Computer Science Education from the University of Toronto and is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto.

Together, Leo and Daniel are sharing their to provide resources in leveraging both GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT to learn programming. Their book is targeting new users who seek to jump start their Python programming knowledge with modern AI tools.

Both are emphasizing how GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT are certainly delivering Python coding more accessible, breaking down the long held traditional barriers to understanding syntax and focusing on how users can leverage Python to focus on problem solving. This does reveal how AI can update code and correct beginners mistakes.

Teaching with AI: A Practical Guide to a New Era of Human Learning by Jose Antonio Bowen and C. Edward Watson

Bowen holds a PhD from Stanford in musicology and humanities. Watson holds a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from Virginia Tech.

The general aim of the book is to address AI in education. Regrettably the book takes very broad brush stokes on a fast moving technology. As a result, they have missed an opportunity. It appears to many that a rush of books addressing AI in education has been underway since the introduction of ChatGPT.

Unfortunately the book misses key, critical requirements for AI integration into workflows, business thinking, and how practical strategies for faculty to leverage AI within the classroom.

The book is divided into three sections:
First, Thinking with AI is very much a basic AI 101 course with broad overviews to how work, literacy and creativity will be shaped by AI. Second, Teaching with AI is focusing on how AI will assist faculty but is not able to address how facutly at a private four year college would be for factuly teaching at a public two year college. Again, lots of broad brush strokes. Finally, Learning with AI is exploring the feedback and how AI can design assignments for students, how AI will change student writing and also assessments.

What Is ChatGPT Doing and Why Does It Work? by Stephen Wolfram

He holds a PhD in particle physics from the California Institute of Technology. Steven then began teaching at Caltech and was the youngest recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship at age 21.

In 1987 he created Wolfram Research and continues to serve as CEO developing both Mathematica and the Wolfram Alpha answer engine. Recently the company announced that Wolfram Alpha would integrate with ChatGPT.

In short, this book is perhaps the first worthy book to address ChatGPT with a full understanding of AI technology. Plus, Steven holds the ability to explain AI, algorithms and equations which will help the reader gain a much better (perhaps the best) understanding of ChatGPT.

Since the first public introduction in late 2022, many have simply asked how does this AI service function? Stephen in fact, lays out in very readable form, the background and basic understanding of neural net technologies. As a scientific discovery, this AI technology has certainly holds great potential to change computing with a potential huge downstream impact to society.
