Good Boss, Bad Boss: How to Be the Best…and Learn from the Worst by Robert Sutton. Robert is a professor of management science at Stanford University and a researcher in the field of evidence-based management.

Good Boss, Bad Boss: How to Be the Best... and Learn from the Worst by Robert I. Sutton PhD

In 2017 he published The No Asshole Rule. I must admit it was a book that leaves an impression upon readers. Good Boss, Bad Boss does reference this work but is a much better delivery.

Robert also previously published Scaling Up Excellence: Getting to More Without Settling for Less, which reveals how to strive for excellence and not allow your organization to become just mediocre.

Basically, Robert shares the difference that good bosses are certainly connected with the teams they lead. This is based upon research proving performance and humanity make all the difference. Robert’s research certainly displays case studies with leaders who both struggled or overcame challenges to lead their teams.

One of the strongest impressions is understanding that regardless of industry or work demands, a good boss will be a shield to their teams from within their organization — often this means leadership. Robert is also delivering a real world view.

The Art of Gathering: How We Meet and Why It Matters by Priya Parker. In the year of COVID why would anyone consider reading a book about gathering? Admittedly it crossed my mind when I received notification from my library. On the contrary this book taught me how to make gatherings a great memorable experience.

The Art of Gathering

Priya is a professional meeting facilitator and certainly has been accumulating a deep understanding how creating meaningful gatherings creates an amazing impact. Yet this is an area we have been overlooking since office meetings began with Powerpoints.

Subsequently I never realized how much we have all lacked advice for making others feel comfortable, engaged, and authentic in social and business gatherings.

As you can see, one may view this book as simply focusing on gatherings. Yet Priya is delivering a solid book on leadership.

Constructing meaningful gatherings is revealed to be a core leadership skill. Priya shares meaningful examples she has facilitated. For all those reasons she breaks down the “how and why” gatherings can work so well.

Decide Why You’re Really Gathering

Her journey to create memorable events begins with a simple challenge. For this purpose many of us are unaware of what is actually required to fully commit to gatherings.

For business meetings this is why defining a clear purpose and an agenda is critical. This includes prepping your guests prior to the event, and establishing meeting rituals from start to finish.

Latest Read: Loonshots

Loonshots: How to Nurture the Crazy Ideas That Win Wars, Cure Diseases, and Transform Industries by Safi Bahcall. This is a very well written book inspiring readers to realize their crazy ideas can be transformational. Safi holds a Ph.D. in physics from Stanford. Continuing his research, Safi focused on condensed matter theory as a post-doctoral research fellow at UC Berkeley.

Loonshots: How to Nurture the Crazy Ideas That Win Wars, Cure Diseases, and Transform Industries

Safi joined McKinsey & Company advising investment banks and pharmaceutical companies. Departing after three years to co-found Synta Pharmaceuticals, he led the company for the next thirteen years. Safi was named Ernst & Young New England Biotechnology / Pharmaceutical Entrepreneur of the Year in 2008.

Loonshots has certainly become one of my favorite reads of 2020. As an engineer in the biomedical marketplace Safi provides a lightning rod of innovation and inspiration.

The most important message however is one’s dedication to ideas that will change the world. Loonshots (even as a fun term) is filled with historical lessons proving crazy ideas actually “need to die three times” before changing world markets.

In addition keys to successful Loonshots under development is the awareness they are very fragile. Fail fast and pivot is a key message to learn. At the same time it becomes clear solving puzzles and mysteries lead to game changing insights.

Work Rules!: Insights from Inside Google That Will Transform How You Live and Lead by Laszlo Bock. Laszlo was the Senior Vice President of People Operations at Google.

Bock’s audience is threefold: Managers, HR professionals, and Employees. For example, Bock is suggesting as managers, hire people smarter than you. Obviously, for HR teams insights on hiring, interviewing and keeping talented people should not be overlooked. Regardless of your organization’s mission or size. Above all, Laszlo’s “be a founder” sums up the type of hire every company strives to achieve, an employee who makes a meaningful impact across the organization.

Above all, I was looking to develop insights to Google’s Objectives and Key Results that impact their operations. Laszlo shares Google’s OKRs (as the general rule) must be specific, measurable, and verifiable. Surprisingly, they indeed push a high level of OKR transparency across the company.

Google OKRs are achievable, relevant, and timed. Data mining is why Google was shifting away from SMART goals. For instance, revising OKRs each quarter proves you need to run lean. Googlers certainly expect to set OKRs that far exceed their teams’ performance. Of course, with any data driven company, all project teams are focusing to aim for the moon. Even failing to achieve, they are still delivering a very good achievement.

Work Rules certainly illustrates a very deep look at the company’s evolution. Learning how they were stumbling offers key insights. For example, adopting benefits like on campus laundry services and nail salons that seems simply over the top for any legacy, old school company.

It’s enjoyable to see how a large tech company grew up so fast. Their practices in People Operations show the world how change is possible. They are stumbling from time to time. It helps to see the luster has worn off the company.
